The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre Join To Create Whistler Alpine Welcome Figure

Whistler, BC - On June 24th at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre(SLCC) in Whistler, master carver Xwalacktun (Rick Harry) will commence the carving of a Salish Welcome Figure to be placed in near Peak 2 Peak Gondola Station as a continuation of Cultural Journey Sea to Sky up Whistler Mountain. The carving is a joint effort by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and the SLCC to increase the profile of Aboriginal Tourism in the region.

Guests, community members and staff are welcome to visit the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler’s Upper Village to meet the carver, assist him in his carving and take some of shavings as mementos from their experience. The welcome figure is expected to be placed in the Whistler Alpine in August, 2010.

Xwalacktun (Rick Harry) is a renowned Squamish Nation carver. He has been an influential figure to many of the younger carvers and youth of the both the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations. His carving will be a traditional Salish Welcome Figure of a man with hands held open while also incorporating some of the key elements of Whistler Blackcomb. Xwalacktun said “I enjoy the opportunity to meet people as I carve and look forward their participation and questions about my work”.

"The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation is very excited to provide a grant that will help support the Cultural Journey hosted by the Squamish and Lil'wat Nations," says Dave Brownlie, President of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation. "A prominent spot for the completed Welcome Figure on Whistler Mountain will culminate the Cultural Journey. Canada’s “King of the Mountains” to be Mayor of Sun Peaks, BC

Al Raine to be first mayor of Sun Peaks – Canada’s newest municipality and the country’s first “mountain resort” municipality
Sun Peaks, BC - On June 28th, Sun Peaks, the BC Interior’s largest ski resort, north of Kamloops, BC, will become Canada’s newest municipality and - under special new Provincial legislation - it will be the country’s first “mountain resort” municipality. It is only fitting that the man who will be leading the first municipal council is Al Raine. Raine, a former National Ski Team coach and husband to Senator (and Olympian) Nancy Greene Raine, has played an integral role in the development of the BC ski industry since the mid 70s and was on the first municipal council in Whistler, BC in the early 80s.

“To be a great resort,” says Raine, who is also the former Chair of Tourism Sun Peaks, “you need to be a great community. With Sun Peaks’ new status as a municipality we will be in a better position to lobby for essential community services like a school and healthcare. Of course, there are also financial advantages, in addition to Municipal tax revenues, Sun Peaks will be eligible for a Provincial grant for small communities and as a mountain resort municipality, the local government will receive a portion of the hotel HST levied in the resort.”

“The community is excited that Sun Peaks will finally govern many of the services it needs from within and the electorate has spoken clearly that local issues should be dealt with by local government. This community is unique in many ways and it was only a matter of time before self governance came to fruition,” says Adam Earle, Publisher of Sun Peaks Independent News. “We have a world class resort, an engaged community population and business sector, and a huge tax base, so it only makes sense that decisions regarding the future of this community are made in this community.”

Saddleback Maine's PEAK Program is Expanded to All of New England

Rangeley, ME - Saddleback Maine is expanding the ski resort's PEAK (Promoting Education and Activity for Kids) program to honor roll students in all of New England. Honor roll students in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont are now eligible to purchase a season pass for only $99.00. Maine honor roll students can purchase a PEAK pass for just $59.00.

"Our Maine PEAK pass was such a great success this past season, we thought, why not encourage all of New England's kids to do well in school?" said Bill Berry, owner of Saddleback. "The program is a great way to encourage our children to excel in school and enjoy outdoor recreation in winter."

Launched in 2009, Saddleback's PEAK Program originally rewarded Maine's honor roll students in grades K-12 with a discounted season pass. Now, Maine honor roll students qualify for the $59 season pass and honor roll students in the other New England states qualify for the $99 season pass. The PEAK program, supported by Governor Baldacci, is designed to encourage students to perform well in school, to help curb childhood obesity, and to promote getting outside and enjoy winter sports.

The two special midweek opening dates align with the Mt. Washington Auto Road’s annual “Ride To The Sky” events when it allows access to motorcycles only. On those same days, vacationing bikers are invited to come fly Wildcat Mountain on New Hampshire’s only ZipRider zip-line cable ride, the state’s highest scenic gondola, or to simply enjoy the mountainside café.

Great American Taxi - “Reckless Habits”

Nashville, TN - In the past five years, Great American Taxi has become one of the best-known headliners on the jam band circuit, their uninhibited sound a swinging concoction of swampy blues, progressive bluegrass, funky New Orleans strut, Southern boogie, honky tonk, gospel and good old fashioned rock ’n’ roll. That loose, anything-can-happen feel is the hallmark of Reckless Habits, the band’s second album, which was recorded in Loveland, Colo., with producer Tim Carbone (from Railroad Earth) working together to bring the feel of an onstage performance to the recording process. Reckless Habits was released through Thirty Tigers on March 2, 2010.

When banjo player Mark Vann of Leftover Salmon died of cancer in 2002, the band lost momentum. Salmon singer/guitarist/mandolinist Vince Herman had a few rough years and survived a broken neck before joining keyboardist Chad Staehly for a superstar jam to benefit the Rainforest Action Group in Boulder in March 2005. “We put together a dream band of the best local musicians for a one-off gig,” Herman recalls. “It worked so well we had to do it again, and again, and again.” The band’s current lineup includes Herman, Staehly, guitarists Jeff Hamer and Jim Lewin, bassist Brian Adams and drummer Chris Sheldon.

Great American Taxi has been compared with roots rockers like New Riders of the Purple Sage, Grateful Dead, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, the Byrds and Little Feat. Herman finds the comparisons flattering. “We’re definitely connected to all the acts in the country/rock spectrum, as well as the spirit of Gram Parsons and Woody Guthrie,” he says. “We want to address the issues appropriate to our times, while making music that gets people up and moving.”

“The band is a true democracy,” Staehly adds. “We tinkered with the tunes on the road, with everybody having input. In the studio, Tim would suggest ideas to make them sound bigger and brighter.” Carbone brought in the Black Swan Singers — Sheryl Renee, CoCo Brown and Shelly Lindsey — to add gospel flavored backing vocals. He also brought the Peak to Freak Horns — Justin Jones, sax; Nathan Peoples, sax; Dan Sears, trumpet; and Dave Stamps, trombone — for some New Orleans-style brass accents, as well as pedal steel player Barry Sless (Dane Nelson Band, Moonalice) and banjo man Matt Flinner.

The band makes its way back to its native Colorado for several summer shows including Durango (6/10), Telluride (6/11), DENVER (6/12), Vail (7/3), and Fort Collins (8/23).

Their latest video for the track American Beauty is here!

The band’s also recently donated a track to raise awareness of the coal miners’ relief fund. The song is “Appalachian Soul” and we’re trying to get it out there in any way we can.
