Putnam U.S. Alpine Championships

Winter Park, CO - With the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup Finals and the NorAm Cup season in the rear-view mirror, the U.S. Ski Team returns home for the Putnam U.S. Alpine Championships set for March 31-April 3 in Winter Park, CO. Among those expected to compete are three-time World Cup giant slalom champion and Putnam athlete Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) and three-time Olympic medalist Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA).

The championships serve as the culmination of a five-month season that crossed continents and countries so America's best alpine skiers could go head-to-head with the world. Top athletes from the over 400 U.S. Ski Team club programs throughout the U.S. will converge on Winter Park for the four-day event.

The event also wraps a full-week of alpine racing at Winter Park which opens March 25 with the Nature Valley NASTAR National Championships, a culmination of the largest recreational ski and snowboard race program in the world.

"U.S. championships are always a fun way to close the season," said Mancuso, after finishing third in both the World Cup downhill and super G standings this season. "I'll definitely be racing everything in Winter Park."

On the elite World Cup level, former U.S. champion Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) added three more discipline titles to bring her career total to 12, while Ligety proved yet again that he is the greatest giant slalom athlete in recent years and Mancuso put on a season-long surge that resulted in victory at the final World Cup downhill.

Another notable U.S. Champs competitor is Nolan Kasper (Warren, VT), who is also a former NorAm champion. This season, Kasper jumped from 64th to 17th in the world slalom rankings and earned the Europa Cup slalom title. It was the first time an American had won a Europa Cup title since Monique Pelletier also took a slalom title in 1989.

"It's a long season, that's for sure," said Kasper. "But U.S. Champs is a pretty special event. There's no other way to see where you match up against the other top athletes across the country. Plus our families are all there and the coaches from our club programs. It feels like a big reunion."

  • Ten Inch Snowfall at Holiday Valley Means More Fun on the Slopes this Weekend

Ellicottville, NY - In like a lamb, out like a lion... March’s weather is proving the old adage to be true. Holiday Valley Resort received ten inches of snow on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, giving the resort a total snowfall of 251 inches so far this season...that’s almost 21 feet of snow! Even though March arrived like a lamb with milder temperatures, Holiday Valley’s average base depth is a generous 19 to 51 inches, with areas of over 10 feet of base. The new snow was groomed in to the base to make a very skiable packed powder and granular surface, which will be great for this weekend’s events.

The annual Pond Skimming Spring Party takes place on Saturday at the base of the Yodeler slope. About 50 brave and hearty souls will ski or ride down the Yodeler slope and attempt to cross a 60 foot ice water filled pond. Prizes will be awarded to the best skimmer, the best crash, the best costume and the best child skimmer. Holiday Valley’s Ride for Roswell Team will be conducting a fundraising raffle and a cookout, a tiki bar and “Parrot Head” music will add to the festivities.

The annual Slush Cup ski race will be held on Sunday on Edelweiss. This last race of the year is a slalom format held for USSA racers ages 13 to 18.

Holiday Valley plans to operate its slopes until April 10 to coincide with the opening of the front nine holes of the Double Black Diamond Golf Course. “This has been an excellent season with record visits in December and January. With the new snow and cooler predicted temperatures, we’re on track for a great wrap up of the year,” said Dennis Eshbaugh, President of the resort. “We’re already planning for improvements this summer and next season with the new Sky High Adventure Park, a new quad chairlift and snowmaking expansion.”

    Monte Carlo Nite!

Bear Valley, CA - Come join us for an evening of fun! Monte Carlo Night is this Saturday at the Bear Valley Lodge from 7 to 10pm! A $25 buy in gets you in the door and appetizers are included! Bromley’s “Mom’s Day Off” Raises $7,905 to Battle Breast Cancer

Bromley Mountain, VT - On Friday, February 4, the ninth annual “Mom’s Day Off,” a breast cancer fundraiser sponsored by and held at Bromley Mountain, drew 527 moms and raised the hefty and record-breaking sum of $7,905. That brings the eight-year total to just shy of $43,000.

The notion behind the annual event is that any mom can ski or ride Bromley on “Mom’s Day Off” for $15 when they show the ticket seller a snapshot of their kids. Bromley, in turn, donates the entire $15 to the VT/NH Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Race for the Cure people (Bromley’s been a sponsor of the race since 1995).

As they have since the first Mom’s Day Off in 2002, the Chicks on Sticks, a group sponsored by the Alpine Sport Shop in Saratoga Springs, New York, arrived en masse, tipping 2011’s “Largest Team” scales in their favor by bringing two chartered busses filled with moms. Another perennial team, The Women of Willard (a.k.a. WOW) made the trip from the Willard Mountain Ski Area in Greenwich, New York, bringing the next largest group.

“We couldn’t be happier,” says Rich Wiseman, Bromley’s President. “We had 420 moms last year and, to tell you the truth, I had my fingers crossed that we’d hit 500 this year. To top last year’s total by 107 is pretty terrific.”

Bromley is also a sponsor of the annual Komen VT/NH Race for the Cure, held each year in July at Hildene Meadows, in Manchester (this year’s Race will be on Saturday, July 23).

Whiteface/NYSEF’s Biesemeyer Wins Overall NorAm Alpine Crown

Whistler, BC - Just one year after suffering a torn ACL, Tommy Biesemeyer of Keene, N.Y., captured the alpine NorAm men’s overall super combined crown after winning the super combined and finishing second in the Super-G, during Sunday’s, March 20, series ending races held in Whistler, British Columbia.

The 22-year-old missed out on most of last season after suffering a torn ACL while preparing for the start of the 2010-11 Europa and World Cup series in Portillo, Chile. That injury forced him to miss the entire season while rehabbing in Park City, Utah. He began skiing at the age of three and is another alpine skier who began is career with the New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) at Whiteface, in Wilmington, N.Y.

“The NYSEF team and coaches that worked with Tommy are absolutely elated over his overall NorAm victory,” said NYSEF director Jay Rand. He joined the NYSEF Program as a youngster and progressed through the program, while simultaneously attending the National Sports Academy. In spite of an ACL injury last season he showed his fortitude and desire to win through this prestigious victory. It is clear that Tommy has what it takes to maintain a long and prosperous career with the U.S. ski team, and he is a great role model for NYSEF’s many up and coming NYSEF Racers.”

Whiteface is very happy to partner with NYSEF to provide World Class training on the Olympic Mountain,” added the mountain’s manager Bruce McCulley. “We are extremely proud of Tommy’s accomplishment and wish him the best for his future.”

Jim Johnston, Biesemeyer’s NYSEF coach added, “Tommy has an exceptional support system from his parents and coaches. It is great to see him excel to the next level, we look forward to following him on the World Cup next season.”

Construction of $2 Million Rides at Camelbeach Begins

Spring Skiing Continuing with Full Snow-Covered Slopes
Tannersville, PA - There's a lot of winter season left to enjoy wonderful skiing and snowboarding and Camelback Mountain Resort, located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, just 1 ½ hours from the New York metro area, has all the ingredients for a fun-packed day on the slopes. Even though the slopes of Camelback aren't schedule to close until April 2nd, you're probably looking at this picture and asking yourself...why would a ski resort want to push snow off their slopes? Because at Camelback Mountain Resort...the "fun" business doesn't end when the snow melts...it just means that another season begins.

Camelback Mountain Resort is also home to Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark, the largest outdoor waterpark in Pennsylvania. In fact, Camelbeach has more slides than any waterpark in Pennsylvania or New Jersey. "Do we really need to push snow off the slopes this early? Not usually and a lot of guests are looking quite puzzled at the fact that we are," says Brian Czarnecki, VP of Sales & Marketing at Camelback. "We're only pushing the snow off two slopes to make way for the construction of the waterpark's two new family tube rides, SandStorm and Dune Runner. Everything about these two new rides literally screams excitement. SandStorm has a pair of tantrum funnels for twice the thrills with twice the panic-inducing fun, while Dune Runner has triple dune drops that build your speed before plunging you into the waters below." adds Czarnecki.

Over 2 million dollars will be spent on the two new slides at Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark, fresh off a 3 million dollar expansion of the four-story, family-friendly, Pharaoh's Phortress ride-house feature added in 2008. The park's count of rides, slides and attractions now totals over 35. Camelbeach will open on the Memorial Weekend Holiday, while the two new rides will open on June 17th.

Wilmington, NY - It’s another Super Sunday, this Sunday, March 13, at Whiteface Mountain, in Wilmington, N.Y. Come celebrate the luck of the Irish with “Shamrock” Sunday, presented by Bud Light, at the Olympic mountain, where skiing and riding is just $35 for adults, $30 for teens and $25 for juniors.

While at Whiteface, skiers and riders can log on to Whiteface’s Facebook and Twitter pages as clues are revealed throughout the day for the on mountain scavenger hunt and win gear from local ski shops including Cunningham’s Ski Barn, Maui North and Viking Ski Shop. At 3 p.m., the party moves to the Cloudspin Lounge for drink specials, prizes, and live music from Trenchtown Oddities.

Whiteface boasts the greatest vertical east of the Rockies, 283 skiable acres and 86 trails and was recently named the number-one ski resort in the eastern United States by readers of SKI Magazine. The mountain also received high marks for its Après-Ski (#2), Dining (#2), Family Programs (#2), Scenery (#2), Terrain/Challenge (#2), Lodging (#4) and Overall Satisfaction (#5).
