Sutton, PQ - To support the importance of planting trees and helping the regeneration of the forest, Mont SUTTON has launched a Facebook campaign “1 Like = 1 Tree.” This project is a natural part of Mont SUTTON's eco-friendly traditions and policies, as Mont SUTTON is well known for its unique concept of glade skiing, its respect for nature and its sustainable development actions.

1 Like = 1 Tree From now until March 22nd, Mont SUTTON promises to plant one tree for every new fan on its Facebook Page. Taking part in this campaign means supporting Mont SUTTON in its actions towards sustainable development. Therefore, several “Like” will make a considerable difference in the preservation of nature.

Protecting nature: the very core of skiing at Mont SUTTON Mont SUTTON is well known for its glade skiing. Year after year, Mont SUTTON’s glades are quoted as the best in Canada, according to Ski Canada Magazine among other publications.

Besides being good for nature, trees are also a part of what makes skiing fun! “Trees protect against the wind, help reduce soil erosion and even help reduce the speed of the snow melt, ensuring a longer spring skiing season,” explains Luc Boulanger, operations director at Mont SUTTON. “Some years, my father, Réal Boulanger, planted hundreds and hundreds of trees in order to preserve the glades,” says Luc. “With ‘1 Like = 1 Tree,’ our fans can help support our actions!” Note that Mont SUTTON also conceded land to the preservation of nature.

Recently opened terrain includes Double Top Glades, Peoria, Silvanite and Topsy. Due to the recent snowfall and phenomenal conditions, the East River Express lift will remain open 7-days-a-week.

Cooper Spur Ski Area Will Open Friday

Mt. Hood, OR - Cooper Spur Ski Area will open for the season this Friday, January 20th. The lifts will officially start turning at Noon on Friday, and the ski area will offer skiing, snowboarding and tubing. The ski area is located on the north side of Mt. Hood, just 23 miles south of Hood River.

The resort will open with a 36” settled base, having received more than four feet of snow this season, most of which fell the last few days. The ski area has one main lift, plus a beginner rope tow and two tubing tows. The ski area will operate on its regular schedule: Noon – 6 PM Friday, 9 AM – 6 PM Saturday and 9 AM – 4 PM Sunday.

Cooper Spur has long been a family favorite offering affordable lift ticket and rental packages. Lift tickets are just $25 for adults, $20 for juniors 7 – 14 or seniors 65+ and $5 for kids 6 and under. The ski area offers ski and board rentals for just $15 for all ages. In addition to its lifts and tubing; Cooper Spur offers ski and snowboard lessons and has a learn to ski or snowboard package for $50 Adults, $45 for Juniors. The learn to ski/snowboard packages includes a lift ticket, 1 hour lesson and equipment rentals. The ski area also has a lodge, food service operation and an outdoor covered deck.

Season Lift and Tubing passes are on sale for just $200 for an individual, with a max of $400 for a family (spouse and dependents age 22 and under), making an entire season of riding at Cooper Spur incredibly affordable.

The Longest Running High School Ski Race in the United States!

Welch, MN - The 37th Annual Welch Village Invitational Ski Race will take place at Welch Village Ski and Snowboard ResortWelch Village Ski and Snowboard Resort on Friday, January 20th.

“This event with all the tents, campfires, great food and great race hills is the highlight of the season and must race to attend for most high school race teams in the area” according to Welch Village Race Director Ann Kulla. This year’s race is sponsored by the Hastings, Northfield and Rochester ski teams. This event features high school teams from across the state including schools like Cretin-Durham Hall, Hill Murray, Hastings, Richfield, St. Cloud, Brainerd, Wayzata, Woodbury, Northfield, Rochester and more. Even with budget cuts and many schools across the state the Welch Village Invitational is still a top priority for a lot of schools with ski teams.

Despite a lack of natural snow and warm early winter, Welch Village and other local ski areas still report a large base of snow for all ski and snowboard enthusiasts. This large base of man-made snow has made it possible for all high school ski teams to have training venues to prepare for races like the Welch event.

The North Face Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships Junior Finals Results from RED Mountain Resort

Rossland - RED Mountain Resort completed the final day of junior competition in The North Face Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships on Saturday, January 14th.

“Overall the event was an awesome celebration of freeskiing. The male 15-18 year old category was mind blowing. Those runs would have placed well even in our senior competition. This is a strong indicator that younger athletes are really going to take skiing to the next level in future years.” said Jeff Holden, the Canadian Open’s Head Judge.

“We’re pleased that the event went very well. There were a lot of kudos from parents and coaches on the event……this event was the best event ever. This year’s event saw elite athletes from California, Utah, Colorado through to Western Canada and it was the strongest set of competitors ever. George Rodney (Aspen, CO), our top 15-18 year old athlete, sailed off a cliff for about 50 feet and that sealed his fate as the top male athlete. Sally Steeves (Rossland, BC), had a very strong run. She showed a commitment to the run and jumped from her qualifying 4th place position to take the top spot in the 15-18 females.“ said Mika Hakkola, RED Mountain Resort’s Marketing and Communications Manager.

The Senior (19 years+) portion of The North Face Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships will run from January 19 – 21, with registration on Wednesday, January 18th.
With 65 registered athletes, the senior event still has room for competitors. The weather forecast is calling for snow all week so the conditions for the senior event look favorable.

As an “Open” format event, anyone over the age of 19 can register for competition. The senior event will see a cash purse up for grabs. Qualifiers will be held on Links Line and the semis and finals will be held on Mount Roberts.

First Tracks at Whiteface Returns... Save $20 off a Lift Ticket Monday, Jan. 16

Wilmington, NY - First Tracks returns to Whiteface Mountain, in Wilmington, N.Y., this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 14-15. This is your chance to carve the day’s first turns on the Olympic mountain.

First Tracks is available to the first 14 skiers and riders who are intermediate or above with a valid lift ticket. Participants can register at the mountain’s guest services desk and be dressed, with boots on, and ready to go by 8 a.m.

Highmount, NY - Belleayre will be having its traditional Winter Festival Week the last week in January from January 21-29. This popular winter celebration will kick off on Saturday, January 21 featuring a Kids' Winter Carnival beginning at noon in the Discovery Lodge. Belleayre will be honoring Rosina Montana and Joan Lawrence-Bauer at the 6th Annual Hall of Fame Dinner on March 31, 2012. Rosina Montana is being honored for her years of work with the Belleayre Ski Patrol and her work as a member on the board of directors on the Belleayre Conservatory which operates the Belleayre Music Festival every summer. Joan Lawrence-Bauer is being recognized for her work in the past in the Belleayre Marketing Department and her tireless community work in Catskills with the M-ARK project. Experienced Team Will Continue to Enhance Attraction for All Seasons

Swain, NY - The operators for the past two years of Swain Resort have announced the purchase of the Allegany County recreational attraction, completing a lease-to-own agreement that was reached in August 2009 with the owners of Swain Recreation Center, LLC.

The purchase was made by Denton Hill Family and Ski Resort Inc. whose officers are Scott and Jodi Carts and Shawn and Celeste Schoonover. The two couples have been operating Swain along with Ski Denton, located 65 miles south of Swain in Potter County, PA.

Assisting in the transaction were the Allegany County Office of Development and the Allegany County Industrial Development Agency (IDA). The purchase price was not disclosed.

“We are delighted to complete our agreement and to close on the purchase of Swain Resort,” said Scott Carts. “Over the past two years, we have worked extremely hard at improving the facilities and services to ensure a quality family experience at Swain and we are excited about the possibilities that the future holds for Swain and our customers.”

Swain Resort has been in business for 64 years and is one of the oldest continuously operating ski areas in New York State. Through the efforts of the new owners, Swain is a year round facility which provides skiing, snowboarding, and a snow tubing park during the winter months and has mountain biking, motor cross racing and sportsman festivals during the other three seasons.

Burton Mountain Festival Comes To Mt. Hood Meadows January 14 - 16

Mt. Hood, OR - For the first time ever, Burton is launching the Burton Mountain Festival tour, a completely new experience that offers riders a full day of FREE on-snow entertainment, including Burton 2012 product demos, live music, sponsor giveaways, mini parks for the smallest snowboarders and an amateur snowboard contest. The Burton Mountain Festival will be presented at Mt. Hood Meadows January 14 – 16 over Martin Luther King weekend.

Burton Mountain Festival includes four key elements: Burton Test Ride, Riglet Parks, Pro-Test and live music for an entire day of good times. And while each festival stop is unique, the foundation of the festival is the Burton Test Ride program - where virtually the entire 2012 Burton hardgoods line will be on tap for riders to test at absolutely no charge. Riders can try out a variety of boards, boots and bindings to get afeel for their ultimate set-up.

In addition to Test Ride, the Mt. Hood Meadows stop willhave a Pro-Test Rail Jam event, Sunday, January 15 - an amateur snowboard competition for men and women. Winter Athletes Update #5

Lake Placid, NY - The second weekend, Jan. 6-9, of the New Year saw some pretty strong results from Whiteface area athletes competing internationally.

Alpine Skiing:Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.), Tommy Beisemeyer (Keene, N.Y.): Weibrecht spent some time home, in Lake Placid, and returns to the World Cup circuit this weekend. Beisemeyer raced in Saturday’s FIS World Cup giant slalom, held in Adelboden, Switzerland and did not finish.

Biathlon:Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.), Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.), Annelies Cook (Saranac Lake, N.Y.): The IBU World Cup tour visited Oberhof, Germany over the weekend. In Saturday’s 10 km sprint, Burke was 36th, while Bailey finished the race in 45th position. The two, along with Jay Hakkinen (Kasilof, Alaska) and Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.), helped the U.S. squad to an 11th place showing in Thursday’s, Jan. 5, 4x7.5 km relay. The weekend wrapped up with the 15 km race… Bailey was 11th and Burke did not race. Cook did not race.

Bobsled:John Napier (Lake Placid, N.Y.): Heavy snow delayed the start of Saturday’s FIBT World Cup two-man bobsled race for two hours and poor visibility forced officials to cancel the race’s second run. Napier finished 17th in the one-heat race. In Sunday’s four-man race, Napier drove his sled to a 16th place result.

Luge:Chris Mazdzer (Saranac Lake, N.Y.), Emily Sweeney (Suffield, Conn.): Mazdzer made his FIL World Cup debut Friday in Koenigssee, Germany. The 2010 Olympian finished 21st in the men’s singles race. He helped USA Luge to a fifth place showing in the team relay. Sweeney did not qualify for the women’s singles race after suffering a spill in Nations Cup qualifying.

Nordic Combined:Bill Demong (Vermontville, N.Y.): Demong competed in Oberstdorf, Germany where he helped anchor Team USA to a fifth place finish in Saturday’s HS137/4x5 km team competition. In Sunday’s FIS Nordic Combined World Cup individual event, the reigning Olympic champion placed 14th.

Ski Jumping:Peter Frenette (Saranac Lake, N.Y.): Frenette did not compete in last weekend’s FIS Continental Cup event in Kranj, Slovenia. That event was cancelled

Crested Butte Celebrates Learn to Ski Month!

Crested Butte, CO - It’s National Learn to Ski & Snowboard month and thanks to an incredible offer from Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR), there’s one more reason to learn this season.

More Trails Now Open!

East Burke, VT - Temperatures at Burke have remained cold enough to make some real nice man-made snow these past couple of days. Snowguns have been running on Carriage Road, Big Dipper, Open Slope, Dashney Mile, Upper Dipper and in a few other areas around Mid Burke. Carriage Road, Big Dipper, and Open Slope are now open and with a few more days on Upper Dipper, we should be able to open it up real soon. The weather forecast for the rest of the week looks like we will see a few more snow showers through Saturday night, giving our trails a fresh layer of natural snow.

The Coors Light Concert Series comes to the Bear Den Lounge this Saturday, January 7 with high energy local act Classic Rewind. Doors open at 8pm with a $5 cover charge. Giveaways from Coors Light and a Burton Snowboard raffle!

Wilmington, NY - There’s never been a better time to learn to ski or ride than January, during the National Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month. The first 31 days of the new year are dedicated as the national month to learn a new snow sport and hundreds of alpine and Nordic ski resorts in 22 states, will be offering discounts and specials on lessons, rentals and lift tickets.

The goal of the Learn to Ski and Snowboard month is to get American families on the slopes and enjoy a healthy winter lifestyle. Organizers are hoping that more than 150,000 children and adults will take ski and snowboard lessons from a professional instructor. Sugar Bowl Resort and KidZone Museum Partner for Caboose Kickers Terrain Park Series

Donner Summit, CA - Sugar Bowl Resort has partnered with KidZone Museum to host four children’s terrain park competitions throughout the 2011/12 winter season. The first competition is on January 8, 2012 from 11:00 – 12:00pm in the Caboose Terrain Park. The competitions teach kids terrain park safety, and introduce them to a safe but competitive skiing/riding atmosphere, ultimately having fun while competing for great prizes.

Competition entry fee is $15 and participants receive half price lift tickets and a free BBQ voucher. Prizes for winners include Dynastar skis, a Flow snowboard, a Giro helmet, jackets from M3 and Vans and other prizes. Registration for all competitions begins at 9:00 am in the Judah Lodge. Freestyle World Cup Skiing Returns to Lake Placid and Wilmington

Wilmington, NY - American skiers Hannah Kearney (Norwich, Vt.) and Ashley Caldwell (Hamilton, Va.) will try to defend their World Cup crowns when the FIS Freestyle World Cup returns to Lake Placid, N.Y. and Whiteface Mountain, in Wilmington, N.Y., Jan. 19-21. Lake Placid is one of only five U.S. sites selected to host a World Cup event this season.

Action begins Thursday, Jan. 19, at Whiteface, when Kearney begins defense of her moguls’ World Cup crown and France’s Guilbault Colas tries to hold off a deep men’s field and capture his second World Cup win on the mountain’s Wilderness Trail. Competition on 240-meter long course begins at 9:15 a.m. with the women’s qualifications, followed by the men’s qualifications at 11:35 a.m. The women’s semi-finals are scheduled to begin at 1:45 p.m. and the men’s semis start at 2:20 p.m. The medal rounds start at 2:40 p.m. for the women and eight minutes later men’s finals is slated to begin.

Action will move over to the Olympic jumping complex both Friday and Saturday night, for two exciting evenings of aerial competitions. The 18-year-old Caldwell, a 2010 Olympian, will begin defense of her World Cup title, when she and the rest of the international field twist, flip, summersault and soar into the evening skies, some as high as 60-feet. The fun begins both nights 7 p.m.

In addition to the exciting action, there will be bonfires, music, giveaways and plenty of food and drinks provided by Centerplate. Saturday’s jumping will also conclude with a fireworks display.

Tickets to the aerial competitions are $15 for adults and $9 for juniors and seniors. A lift ticket and skis are required to view the mogul events Whiteface.

Grand Opening of the Red Barn

Highmount, NY - The Red Barn Bar located in the Lower Discovery Lodge will be holding its grand opening on Saturday, December 24th.

The Red Barn bar was created and built by Belleayre Mountain employees as a representation of the Catskill Mountains. The main inspiration behind the bar was farming, specifically dairy farming. All of the horse tackles and farm implements used to decorate the Red Barn were donated by local community farmers.

The main sign for the Red Barn bar was fashioned from steel, a strong and permanent fixture. No paint was used in the coloration of the sign. Chemical reactions caused by vinegar and bleach, heat reactions and a touch of copper and brass were used to create the polished look of the sign.

Woodwork and framing was done primarily by Cassie Merwin with help from Raphael Santiago. The steel work was done by Darren Morgan and Donny Bush. When asked about the look of the bar, the employees said that the look evolved on its own.

Donner Summit, CA - With recent colder temperatures allowing crews to operate snowmaking around the clock, Sugar Bowl Resort will reopen this weekend with additional lifts and expanded terrain, including the Mt. Lincoln Express quad, effectively serving up 1,500 vertical feet of top-to-bottom skiing and riding. In addition, the Switching Yard Terrain Park will make its season debut with numerous features, accessed via the Emigrant Gap trail off the Jerome Hill Express quad. This will add significantly more skiing and riding to Eldora’s current line up of open terrain and exceptional conditions. This is a new event designation for the sport of Ski Mountaineering in North America, and CBMR is rising to the occasion with a more technical course, including a class-five boot pack ascent. The ISMF North American Championships take place at CBMR on Saturday Jan. 28 and Sunday Jan. 29, 2012.

“The Crested Butte Professional Ski Patrol is proud to be part of such a uniquely challenging event in North America,” says Bill Dowell, Ski Patrol Director for CBMR. “It is a great opportunity to highlight some of our extreme terrain on the upper parts of the mountain and showcase the skill and expertise of our technical rigging personnel. CBMR has been included as a race stop on the COSMIC series tour for the past five years (and part of the Rando Rally for five years prior). It is one of the longest-standing venues with exceptional race success. The North American Championships course will follow a similar path to previous years’ races, however the new route also will include a technical class-five assent up The Guides Ridge to the peak of Mt. CB – a rarely attempted route during the winter months. CBMR Ski Patrol and Crested Butte Mountain Guides will assist with installation of a fixed route line, and with safety during the race. The new course is being modeled after European Championships race courses to enable North American athletes to prepare for worldwide competition.

The ISMF North American Championships Ski Mountaineering race begins and ends in the CBMR base area and competitors will face over 5,000 feet of vertical elevation gain and loss, focused on much of CBMR’s most technical terrain. The race is open to individual competitors; no teams allowed in this event.

The ISMF North American Championships takes place at CBMR on Saturday, Jan. 28 with a Sprint race and the Individual race on Sunday Jan. 29, 2012; both races start in the CBMR base area.

Whiteface Opens with Over 14 Inches of Fresh Snow

Wilmington, NY - Whiteface is ready to open for its 54th skiing and riding season on Friday, Nov. 25, at 8:30 a.m. Crews began blowing snow on the Olympic mountain Wednesday night, Nov. 16. Snow guns have been covering Upper Valley, Lower Valley and Fox preparing for opening day.

Opening day lift tickets lift tickets on Friday are $38 for adults/teens/seniors and $24 for juniors (7-12). These prices will be in effect throughout the weekend.

“Crews have done a great job in putting down snow with marginal temperatures,” said mountain manager Bruce McCulley. “Most of our snowmaking has occurred at night, when it’s much colder. We’ve built some great coverage on Upper Valley and Lower Valley and we’re up and ready for opening day.”

Mother Nature also helped out Tuesday night and Wednesday, delivering more than 14-inches of natural snowfall on the Olympic mountain. That means that Upper Valley, Lower Valley and the Fox trails will be open Friday, all serviced by the Face Lift chair. Crews are continuing to blow snow on upper Excelsior and the trail will open conditions permitting.

First Mountain Resort in New Hampshire to Open for 2011-12 Winter Season
Lincoln, NH - New Hampshire’s Loon Mountain opened today for its 45th winter season with 5 trails, 22 acres and two miles of intermediate and advanced level terrain on the upper mountain with downloading on the gondola. Trails open today include Upper Bear Claw, Bear Claw Extension, Grand Junction, Link, and Upper Picked Rock. The lift ticket price for opening day is $20 for all ages. Loon is the first mountain resort to open in New Hampshire for the 2011-12 winter season.

Snowmaking temperatures are expected to return tonight and more terrain is expected to open this week. For Thanksgiving, Loon anticipates offering top-to-bottom terrain with at least 10 trails, over 60 acres and more than 4 miles of skiing and riding. Loon’s addition of 600 highly-efficient tower snow guns in the past two years, including an additional 170 snow guns added for this year, allows the resort to cover maximum terrain in a short period of time and expand open terrain quickly. Earlier this week, 288 snow guns were running at one time, covering 10 trails.

The temporary bridge, which will provide access to the Resort from Route 112/The Kancamagus Highway, is expected to open this Wednesday, November 23, in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. The temporary bridge, a two-lane vehicular bridge which will also include a sidewalk, will remain in place throughout the 2011-12 winter season. In the meantime, there is alternate vehicular access available via the South Peak Bridge, located two miles to the west in the town of Lincoln.

Sun Peaks, BC - The lifts start turning at Sun Peaks this Saturday as the resort begins its 50th winter of operations. It was November 1961 when Tod Mountain opened for skiers and this season is full of commemorative events for the golden anniversary.

US Ski Team to Hold Fall Camp at Wolf Creek Ski Area

Wolf Creek, CO - Incredible early season snowfall at Wolf Creek Ski Area brings US Mogul team to fall camp for practice!

With 100 inches of snowfall so far this October and November, Wolf Creek Ski Area is 100 percent open and ready to host the 20 member US Mogul Team and their coaches, November 14 through November 19, 2011. Training will take place daily from 10:00AM to 2:00PM, with a day off on November 17th.

Saturday and Sunday, November 12th and 13th, will be spent prepping the course on Alberta Face by setting turn flags and jump building. The course will be located under the Treasure Chairlift, which will make the entire event visible for all skiers and boarders! Burleigh Sunflower, who has been Bromley’s Snowboard School Manager for the past seven years and the Snowboard Supervisor at Okemo’s Jackson Gore base area prior to that, has been named Bromley’s new Director of Snow Sports.

“I’ve worked with Pete for more than twenty years,” said Bill Cairns, Bromley’s General Manager. “He’s done a fantastic job for us here over the years and has built the [ski and snowboard] school into one of the most respected programs in the industry. I, personally, and all of us here at Bromley, wish Pete nothing but success and happiness in his new endeavors.”

Arapahoe Basin, CO - After a great week of snowmaking and several fresh inches of snow, Arapahoe Basin ski area officials announce that opening day for the 2011-2012 ski season will be Thursday, October 13, 2011. The ski area has only been closed 100 days since last season ended on July 4, 2011.

Black Mountain Express will open to the public at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. Skiers and riders can look forward to an 18-inch base on the intermediate High Noon run along with several features in the High Divide Terrain Park. There will be no beginner skiing at this time.

A tribute to Arapahoe Basin founders Marnie Jump and Max Dercum who passed away this year will take place before the lifts open to the public. Opening day adult lift tickets will be available for $59, youth tickets age 15 - 18 will be $49 and child tickets age 6-14 will be $30. The ski and snowboard rental shop, tune shop, food and beverage service, the 6th Alley bar and retail shop will be open to the public. Snowsports lessons will be available on a limited basis. Local radio station, KYSL will be doing a live morning show and giving away lift tickets on-air. Snowshoe, WV - SNOWSHOE, W.Va.- Winter didn’t wait long to kick into high gear at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. The Pocahontas County, W.Va resort saw four inches of snowfall on Saturday. The first flakes of the season were spotted just before midnight on Friday, September 30th and snow continued intermittently throughout the day on Saturday. Additional snowfall is expected through mid-day on Monday, with up to another inch of accumulation possible. Snowshoe is the first ski resort on the East Coast to record measurable snowfall this season.

With ski season just about six weeks away, Snowshoe also took advantage of cold temperatures on Saturday morning and fired up several of the resort’s powerful snowmaking guns. The resort plans to open for the winter season on Wednesday, November 23rd, just in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Regular snowmaking isn’t scheduled to begin until November 1st, but this early test allowed the resort to ensure equipment is in top shape with a new season just around the corner.

Cranmore Mountain Adds More Activities, Invests in Snowmaking and Facilities for This Winter

Highmount, NY - Belleayre Mountain began preparing its emergency evacuation center in response to a severe hurricane warning for the Catskill Region in anticipation of major flooding in the Phoenicia and Margaretville areas. Belleayre Mountain began preparing its emergency evacuation center in response to a severe hurricane warning for the Catskill Region in anticipation of major flooding in the Phoenicia and Margaretville areas.In the wake of Hurricane Irene, the emergency evacuation center was in full operation servicing 120 adults, 40 children and 20 dogs. During the first night, Belleayre was used as an emergency ambulance dispatch center because Margaretville Hospital and Kingston Hospitals were cut off by flooding and road closures. The emergency evacuation center included an expanded 16 bed, fully equipped medical response facility able to service ambulance calls.

Road closures made it necessary to establish helicopter landing zones in both the upper and lower areas to accommodate emergency evacuations and incoming food deliveries. Food deliveries and donations made it possible for the Belleayre Kitchen, operated by Centerplate, to provide an average of 1,200 meals a day as well as distributing 4,000 MRE’s provided by the American Red Cross.The evacuation center then expanded to include the NYS Office of Emergency Management headquarters with representatives from FEMA, OEM, Red Cross, and other Delaware and Ulster County relief offices, along with an area open to the public to apply for hurricane relief.All of Belleayre’s employees dedicated their time to the relief efforts and went above and beyond. A variety of duties were preformed including preparing, serving and delivering meals. The staff took turns in the food pantry unloading, signing in food donations, clothing donations, organizing the goods and assisting the public with their needs. Staff established helicopter landing zones and unloaded and then reloaded supplies to be sent out to communities in need. The new maintenance center was used to fix emergency equipment from Ulster County. The county provided mechanics to work alongside Belleayre employees to fix equipment and emergency vehicles including fire trucks, ambulances and heavy machinery.

NH Highland Games Still Scheduled for September 16-19

Lincoln, NH - Despite damage to the main bridge that accesses Loon Mountain Resort from Route 112, Loon is open for all summer activities. Alternate access to the resort is available via South Peak Bridge, located to the west in the town of Lincoln.Sunday’s tropical storm dumped up to 5” of rain over the area, causing the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River to flood, undermining the bridge abutments and closing Route 112/The Kacamagus Highway east of the Resort. The NH Department of Transportation closed the bridge on Sunday evening and state engineers were here on Tuesday to assess the damage and get repair work started. Repair work began Tuesday afternoon, and then a portion of the bridge collapsed early this morning. The collapse did not stop repair work, which continues today.“The good news is that we are open and work has already begun to repair the bridge. We were very fortunate that we did not sustain any further major damage, as did several other resorts and many other areas in New England,” said Rick Kelley, president & general manager. “We’ve had great cooperation and assistance from the Town of Lincoln, the State of New Hampshire, and the utility companies.”There will be no impact on winter operations and alternate plans are already in place to host the upcoming 36th Annual New Hampshire Highland Games, September 16-18. “This is a very important event, both for Loon and the Lincoln Woodstock area, and we are committed to doing whatever it takes to make sure the Games go on as scheduled at Loon,” said Kelley.Loon is open daily for all activities through Labor Day, and hosts the annual Summer Sendoff event on September 3-4 as scheduled. Holiday Valley’s Mountain Coaster to Open

Ellicottville, NY - The Grand Opening celebration of the Mountain Coaster at Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park will be held on Saturday, August 20 at 10AM. The Mountain Coaster is located in the Tannenbaum (western most) area of the resort and is next to the Aerial Adventure Park that opened earlier this summer. According to Holiday Valley’s President Dennis Eshbaugh, “the addition of the Mountain Coaster is an important piece of the whole resort that attracts visitors to Holiday Valley and the region on a year ‘round basis.”

The Mountain Coaster is similar to a roller coaster with cars that ride upon a track. One or two riders load a car and travel 1,865 feet up the hill parallel to the Spruce Lake lift. At the apex the car begins its thrilling 2,490 foot descent zigzagging and spiraling down through the woods. There are 15 curves, 12 waves, 2 jumps and a giant spiral along the length of the ride. The average grade is 15.2% with a maximum of 23.6%. Riders can accelerate or decelerate using handles on the sides of the car.

The coaster was designed, engineered and manufactured by Weigand of Germany and was shipped in 7 containers, each containing thousands of individual parts much like a giant Erector Set. Construction of the coaster was an intense 10 week process, as all of the parts and measurements were metric and the plans were written in German. The crew was led by 2 representatives of Weigand with the Holiday Valley Mountain Crew and 9 additional part-time workers who assembled and welded all of the pieces and then placed them in their exact location according to the plans. Several local contractors supplied concrete work, welding, carpentry work, logging, paving, stone masonry and wiring.

The Mountain Coaster will operate daily through September 5 and then weekends through at least October 9. The coaster will also operate during the winter season. The cost of a single ride is $6 during the summer season.

Wilmington/Whiteface 100K Presented by SRAM Field begins to Fill

Wilmington, NY - From doctors to lawyers, Olympians to professional cyclists and even NFL punters, the inaugural Wilmington/ Whiteface 100K Mountain Bike Race presented by SRAM (WW100) will have a wide array of riders. Some of the more than 200 cyclists for Sunday’s, June 19, race are trying to qualify for August’s Leadville 100 MTB (LT 100), while others are hoping they can just complete the grueling 57-mile long course.

“Some of the cyclists have already been on the course preparing themselves physically and mentally,” said David Weins, the race’s technical director. Weins is also a six-time Leadville champion. “From what I’ve heard so far, everyone likes the course and the terrain that it covers. Some have even said the ‘climbs are fun.’ It’s demanding and will test these riders. This event will bring out the best from everyone in the field.”

“I’m pretty good at climbing, but my specialty is weaving through trails and trees,” added 2010 men’s singles luge Olympian Chris Mazdzer, of Saranac Lake, N.Y. “There are some pretty good climbs, especially up Whiteface … that’s a tough one to finish on.”

The race is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m., with a shotgun start from the Whiteface Mountain bridge. From there, the cyclists will tear down paved and dirt roads near Jay and Saddleback Mountains before returning to the Olympic mountain where a 2,566 foot climb awaits them before crossing the finish line.

The field’s top riders are expected to cross the finish line in about four hours. Racers will have a total of eight hours to complete the race.

“I really haven’t had a lot of time on a bike this summer,” continued Mazdzer. “I’m not really sure what to expect, but I plan on riding as much as I can, get some hours in, over the next several days and take it from there. I really don’t have a finish time in mind.”

Pat’s Peak and Attitash Mountain host the Eastern New Hampshire State Championships and the States Cup

Pat’s Peak, Henniker, NH and Attitash Mountain, Bartlett, NH will host the Eastern States Cup USA Cycling Regional Championship Series and the USA Cycling NH State Downhill Mountain Bike Championships June 12th and 19th respectively. The Eastern States Cup Series is a USA Cycling Regional Championship Series and features three USA Cycling State Championships. The NH State Champions will be crowned at Attitash after the race. Both venues will offer Saturday and Sunday practice for the racers and spectators.

“Save the Bierstube” Renovations to Continue This Summer

Whitefish, MT - The final stage of a two-phase structural improvement project will begin this summer at the Bierstube in Whitefish Mountain Resort’s upper village. The Bierstube has been a part of the mountain’s culture since the 1950s and was named one of the “Top 10 great places for après-ski nightlife” by USA Today in February 2011. The business has been located in its present building since 1967. The building is owned by Whitefish Mountain Resort.

“The Bierstube has played a significant role in shaping the mountain culture of this resort,” Whitefish Mountain Resort President Dan Graves said. “We feel strongly, as part of our commitment to preserve the ski area’s heritage, we want to extend its life for years to come.”

Phase one was completed during the fall of 2010 before the start of the ski season after the discovery that the building was beginning to lean. Engineering analysis revealed the need to raise the building’s north east corner and pour new concrete. Phase two will focus on the south and west sides of the building where new concrete will be poured for footings and improvements to the building’s foundation. No changes will be made to the interior of the building which plans to open June 18 when Whitefish Mountain Resort summer operations begin.

“The Bierstube means a lot of things to a lot of people, we have visitors who come back every year, some who come in after 10, 20 years and thank us for being here,” said Bierstube owner and operator Scott McIntosh. “We are excited that the future of the Bierstube is solidified. Leadville Qualifying Series Begins June 19 in Wilmington, N.Y.

Wilmington, NY - Baseball has its World Series, football the Super Bowl and mountain biking has the Leadville Trail 100 MTB Race (LT 100). The LT 100 is legendary.

Since 1994, the 103 mile long race, set 13,000 feet up in the treacherous Colorado Rocky terrain has tested each rider’s determination, guts and even sanity. So challenging and famous is this race, the LT 100 has even tested the toughness of seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, and Levi Leipheimer, the 2006 winner of the Dauphiné Libéré, and 2005 Deutschland Tour champion.

Due to the race’s international recognition and increased demand for participation, riders traditionally gained entry into the LT 100 by means of a lottery system, making it an extremely difficult race to access. This year, Life Time Fitness, Inc. and AEG announced the creation of the Leadville Qualifying Series for the 2011 LT 100. The 2011 qualifying series will consist of three races, with each race covering approximately 100 kilometers and providing 100 entries to the LT 100. Fifty of these spots will be allocated based on age-group performance and the other fifty will be distributed by a drawing among the finishers who have met the time standard that is specific to each qualifying event.

“This series will allow the LT 100 to become more attainable to some riders whose dream it has been to get to the LT 100,” said David Weins, a six-time Leadville 100 MTB race champion. “There are a lot of bikers out there that want a taste of what the LT 100 experience is all about, yet may not necessarily have the time to train for such an intense competition. The Leadville Qualifying Series gives riders a bit of the thrill and shows them a little of what the LT 100 is all about, it’s a stepping stone for riders out there looking for some adventure, but not yet ready to move on to the next level.”

One of those qualifying races is slated to take place Sunday, June 19, in Wilmington, N.Y. The inaugural Wilmington/ Whiteface 100k presented by SRAM is expected to bring more than 300 cyclists to the area, each hoping to grab one of those 100 coveted spots into the LT 100.

“The Town of Wilmington is very excited to be hosting this event and Leadville qualifier,” noted Randy Preston, Town of Wilmington supervisor. Bartlett, NH - Attitash Mountain Resort has announced that it will be hosting the New Hampshire State Championship Finals for the Eastern States Cup downhill mountain biking series. The Eastern States Cup (ESC) is a USA Cycling (USAC) Regional Championship Series. Within the ESC series, three separate USAC State Championships will be contested with 4 events in New York, 4 events in Vermont, and 2 events in New Hampshire including the Attitash Mountain Resort New Hampshire State Championship occurring on the weekend of Saturday, June 18th & Sunday, June 19th. The other New Hampshire ESC event will be held at Pats Peak on Saturday, June 11th & Sunday, June 12th and it is required that riders compete in both New Hampshire events to qualify for the individual state championship.

“We are pleased to hold the Eastern States Cup event here and to showcase the downhill terrain at Attitash to a visiting field of New England riders,” said Attitash Mountain Bike Programs Coordinator Nate Waterhouse. “The event should be quite an exciting race for the riders and also something to see for locals and visitors unfamiliar with downhill mountain biking.” Attitash has been offering lift-serviced, downhill, mountain biking since the late 90’s, but the sport has progressed significantly since then. “Let’s Go Fishing” Event Celebrates Weeks Act Centennial and National Get Outdoors Day

Pinkham Notch, NH - This year's "Let's Go Fishing" event scheduled for Saturday, June 18th will be a great way to learn how to fish or develop your fishing skills. As part of the New Hampshire Fish & Game Aquatic Resources Education Program, representatives and volunteers will be joined by the U.S. Forest Service and Appalachian Mountain Club to provide a day's wealth of experience and knowledge to help the beginning angler get started.

Participants, who register on the morning of the event, will receive a “passport” outlining 5 stations that must be completed before they can begin fishing. Educational and instructional skill stations will include: Knot Tying; Fish ID; Casting; Ecology; Macro Invertebrates; and Fishing. Each station activity will take 15-20 minutes to complete and once an activity has been completed, the passport will be stamped and the aspiring angler will be one step closer to casting a line in the stocked fishing pond.

The free event, co-sponsored and thankful support in part from the White Mountain Interpretative Association, will take place from 10am - 3pm rain or shine (*registration cut-off is 12pm) and all ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and all persons should bring proper footwear and clothing as well as personal sun protection (hat, sunglasses, spf) and bug repellent. The fishing pond at Wildcat Mountain is accessible via the “C lot” entrance located approximately a quarter mile past the main entrance on the north-bound side of Rt. 16 heading toward Gorham, New Hampshire.

The “Let’s Go Fishing” Day event at Wildcat Mountain is part of a coordinated New Hampshire effort celebrating the Weeks Act Centennial and honoring the tradition of conservation and partnerships exemplified by the act, which created Eastern National Forests. This celebration of the Weeks Act and the creation of Eastern National Forests provide an opportunity to promote increased awareness of sustainable forestry, land stewardship and citizen-based conservation. This event is also included among the National Get Outdoors Day events in June which encourages Americans, especially our youth, to seek out healthy, active outdoor lives and embrace our parks, forests, refuges and other public lands and waters.
