Snowshoe, WV - After a rollercoaster fall,
Snowshoe Mountain Resort will open ski operations for the 2010.2011 season on Friday, December 10th at 9am. The Pocahontas County resort saw early snowflakes fall on October 5th, but has seen less than an inch of total snowfall since that time. A mild November forced the resort to delay its planned Opening Day on November 24th. With some good snowmaking weather following the Thanksgiving Holiday, and long-term forecasts calling for a cold start to the month of December, Snowshoe has targeted the 10th for Opening Day. With several chances for periods of prolonged snowmaking, the resort will open with great snow coverage from top to bottom and a variety of available terrain.
While skiers and riders have anxiously waited for winter weather to arrive, they have been reminded that the 2009.2010 season saw a similar delayed start at many of the region’s resorts, but finished with 200+ inches of natural snowfall at Snowshoe and one of the best seasons in recent memory. This year’s mild start to the season was not unexpected, as it’s a La Nina weather year. That typically means a mild fall for the southeast, followed by a cold, snowy December and a slightly mild January. That outlook bodes well for the season to come at Snowshoe. The Holiday period, always the busiest at the resort, should provide great conditions with the possibility of some great natural snow. And with January historically being the resort’s coldest month, a slight warm-up should only mean more comfortable conditions for the resort’s guests, without impairing snowmaking operations.
Snowshoe will continue to be aggressive with snowmaking operations over the next two weeks. The resort hopes to open significant terrain on December 10th. The resort will also open with a variety of available amenities, including restaurants, shops, The Big Top Entertainment Center, Split Rock Pools and more.
