Epic Conditions at Crested Butte

Crested Butte, CO - A huge storm moved into the West Elks over the weekend dropping 28” of new snow on Crested Butte. Combined with today’s bluebird skies, the latest snowfall made for epic conditions and huge grins around the resort. It's been an incredible week, with 10 inches falling in the last 48 hours and 28 inches falling in the last seven days.

Aside from pleasing locals and guests, the conditions were timed exquisitely for competitors in The 30th Annual Prater Cup and the 19th Annual Subaru Extreme Freeskiing Championships. The Subaru Freeskiing Extremes lived up to the hype again this year with the mounting snowfall pushing the event into day 4 while Crested Butte Ski Patrol worked to provide safe conditions. Local superstar Caleb Mullen nabbed a third place finish in the men’s category, just behind top finishers Griffin Post and Cliff Bennett. Vail local Claudia Bouvier stomped her way down a beautiful pillow line, known as Hand Rail, for a first place finish among the women.

The two hundred 11 and 12 year old speed racers in The Prater Cup rose to the challenge of the heavy snow as they mixed up their home teams and regrouped based on performance level. The kids learn to cheer on their new teammates for the weekend in the Super G, Slalom and GS while vying for a chance to qualify for the J4 Rocky Mountain Championships.

Crested Butte Opens Famous 'Extreme Limits' Terrain

Crested Butte, CO - The world famous “Extreme Limits” began to open today at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. In addition to eight inches of new snow on smooth beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain overnight, skiers and riders are celebrating the ability to once again visit parts of the resort that offer some of the toughest in-bounds skiing in North America. Characterized by deep snow-holding tree glades, exciting drops into soft landings, and truly challenging expert runs, the Extreme Limits terrain has been a draw for many years, highlighted by the resort’s history of hosting the World Extreme Freeskiing Championships for the past nineteen years.

Ensuring that the terrain was safe for skiers was the top priority of the ski patrol and mountain operations crew. Although Crested Butte fans have been “chomping at the bit” to get to the expert-only terrain, “making sure that safety came first was essential”, according to Chris Corliss, Mountain Manager.
A great way to explore the Extreme Terrain is with Wendy Fisher, who will host a special Valentine’s Ski Clinic, February 13-15 for those who “love” to ski, as well as offering private lessons and other ski improvement clinics throughout the season. Fisher, a former Olympic skier and United States Extreme Freeskiing champion, is also a Crested Butte Mountain Resort Ambassador.

Roger Pepper Camp for Teen Burn Survivors in Crested Butte

Mt. Crested Butte, CO - Port Richey, Florida resident Brandon Wolf found refuge in the Adaptive Sports Center’s Roger Pepper Camp for teenage burn survivors when he was 14 years old. Now, at 22, he is coming back to serve as a chaperone for the camp that helped him come into his own as a teenager.

This winter’s camp is made up of eleven new and returning attendees from Texas, Florida, Missouri and Washington, who will ski and snowboard at Crested Butte Mountain Resort and ice climb in Ouray, Colorado. All activities will be led by instructors from the Adaptive Sports Center. Campers will share a home in Crested Butte for the week, where they will gather for group meals and socializing in the evenings.
Roger Pepper Camp founder Allison Massari nearly lost her life in a car accident in 1998, and established the camp in 2001. Roger Pepper was the man who pulled Massari from her burning car, saving her life and risking his own. Roger Pepper Camp is run by the Adaptive Sports Center and is funded entirely by private donors; participants pay nothing to attend. The camp is run for one week in the summer and one week in the winter. Massari, an artist, teacher and inspirational speaker, will attend a portion of this winter’s camp, with plans to share her story and words of advice with the group.

Woman’s Day Magazine Recognizes Crested Butte Mountain Resort as One of the “Ten Soaring Ski Resorts”

Mt. Crested Butte, CO - Crested Butte Mountain Resort was recognized as one of the “Ten Soaring Ski Resorts” in the world by Woman’s Day Magazine, a lifestyle publication in print for over 70 years. As one of only ten resorts named in the article, and the only Colorado ski resort on the list, Crested Butte Mountain Resort joined other locations such as Chamonix-Mont, France; Whistler, British Columbia, Canada; and Kitzbühel, Austria.
