Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships – Senior FINALS

Rossland, BC - RED Mountain hosted the 10th Annual Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships Senior event this past weekend. With a flurry of walk-in registrations the competition had a healthy group of competitors vying for top spot in the Senior Open.

With variable cloudiness, fresh snow and mild temperatures, the finals for the senior portion of the event concluded on Saturday, January 15th. With all of the athletes descending down the slopes of Mount Roberts, typically known as a backcountry enthusiast slope, the championship saw a tough pool of competitors showing top caliber skiing. Prize money was issued for the top 5 athletes in the men’s and women’s categories. Top athletes, CJ Wright and Kasie Stroshin took top spot for the Senior Men’s and Women’s categories respectively. Local RED athletes Colston Villanueva Beatson placed 4th in the men’s category and Leah Evans placed 5th in the women’s category. Rafters Bar, RED’s renovated bar, played host to the Kokanee Afterparty which rounded out the celebration.

Playgrounds Beyond Boundaries

Rossland, BC - There are playgrounds with boundaries and playgrounds that go beyond boundaries. RED Mountain has long been celebrated as the latter. Recognizing how important off-piste skiing and snowboarding is to our guests, this winter RED is opening over 300 acres of new off-piste terrain on Grey Mountain. In addition, RED is offering day and over-night guided backcountry tours to a newly erected yurt on Kirkup Mountain called the Alpine Glory Hut.

Grey and Kirkup are two of five peaks within RED Mountain Resort’s 4,200 acre controlled recreational ski area and land use tenure.

Grey’s easy approach starts through an access gate on lift-serviced Granite Mountain. With a 20 minute skin or snowshoe on the up-track, Grey’s beautiful south facing slopes offer over 2,200 feet of consistent vertical drop ideal for advanced intermediate and expert powder skiers and riders. Two new runs have been cut providing a convenient ski-out directly back to Granite’s lift-assisted terrain.

“Grey has always been one of the resort’s favourite places to access our backcountry and ski fresh powder with a relatively easy and short hike. The glading and tree thinning recently completed on Grey now creates more lines for our customers to ski and enjoy,” proclaims RED’s President and CEO Howard Katkov. “Consistent with our intention to continue to open up additional terrain, Grey now features over 300 new acres pursuant to our Master Plan.”

All skiers and riders accessing Grey and surrounding peaks are required to be equipped for backcountry touring with avalanche transceivers, probes and shovels. Knowledge of backcountry conditions, snowpack and avalanche terrain is also a must.

This year’s Canadian Open will be the 10th anniversary of international freeskiing competition at RED, western Canada’s first ski area. A huge favorite amongst athletes, spectators, media, the industry, staff and sponsors, the event continues to reign as Canada’s premiere big mountain freeskiing championship.
Registration for the Senior Open event is limited to skiers 19 years and older. The Junior event is open to skiers aged 7-18.

Future Stars Cross Country Mountain Biking Camp coming to RED Mountain

Rossland, BC - RED Mountain would like to announce that Future Stars Cross Country Mountain Bike Camp will be hosted at RED Mountain Resort’s Lodging and utilizing the comprehensive trail network found within Rossland. The camp runs from July 30th to August 1st, 2010.

Rossland has a thriving community of mountain bikers and a comprehensive mountain biking trail system that makes RED Mountain and Rossland, BC a well suited location for mountain biking camps. Deanne Steven, Executive Director of Tourism Rossland notes “We are really excited to have this type of event in Rossland, as we are world renowned for our trail network!”.

With a trail system which is maintained, labeled and managed by the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society that stretches over 200 km and home to the world renowned and IMBA praised 7 Summits trail, those that come to the camp will certainly enjoy the terrain and challenges that the trail system provides.

RED Mountain will be hosting the camp as the official accommodations of the Future Stars Cross Country Mountain Bike Camp. Future Stars Cross Country Mountain Bike Camps provide young athletes with the unique opportunity to learn from and interact with Canadian Olympians. The program will cover all aspects including race strategy, race style workouts, technical trail riding, core strength workouts and nutrition and endurance riding. It is Future Stars’ goal to ensure that each participant has an enjoyable experience and reaches their fullest potential.

‘Illuminati’ Add to the Legend of RED Mountain

Rossland, BC - Fueled by 30cm of late-season powder, the second annual Gathering at RED Mountain closed out the BC winter season with inspiring presentations by Powder Magazine’s hottest photographers and other image-makers – the ‘Illuminati’ of the ski world. Last year’s Gathering was a spontaneous get-together of long-time friends, but this year’s lensmen stepped things up a notch with top-shelf presentations before spell bound audiences from Canada, USA, Europe, and Australia.

Highlights of the two evenings’ presentations included:
*Wade McKoy set the scene behind some of his classic Jackson Hole shots.
*Ace Kvale mesmerized the audience with images from his recent humanitarian efforts in Southeast Asia and Africa
*The North Face skier Kasha Rigby showcased soulful moments of her many expeditions through the Himalayas.
*The youngblood of the group, Vancouver’s Jordan Manley brought focus to why BC is an epicenter of mountain experience.
*SLC-based Erik Seo explained the intricate staging and patience required to get those innovative new-school shots.
*John Falkiner and Mark Shapiro gave a glimpse into the unexpected world of ski touring in Lebanon.
*As ye olde grand finale, Dave Heath rounded up antique gear and apparel from Rossland garages and threw down a sepia-toned slide show of modern-day ski pioneers.

Among ski world insiders, no spot is better loved than Rafters Pub on the top floor of the RED Mountain Lodge, and it hosted multiple impromptu jam sessions with local music talent and the presenters throughout the festivities.
