Owl’s Head is pleased to welcome disabled Canadian Forces personnel, active or retired, in their Soldier-On Program to ASF’s annual “Soldier-On Fest 2013”. Thirty Canadian Force’s soldiers who have served in Afganistan will participate.
These participants from the Canadian Forces will come from bases in the Maritimes as well as Quebec and Eastern and Southern Ontario.
With curling being added to the regular adaptive ski program, the ASF has added an extra day of activities. The five-day “Soldier-On Fest 2013” will again be held at Owl’s Head Ski Resort in Mansonville, Quebec from February 3rd to the 8th.
Wounded soldiers, several of whom are returning for their second year, will work with specially trained volunteer instructors from ASF to gain new skills and confidence in adaptive skiing. The extra day of curling activity will be held at the Curling Club of Magog, with the Provincial Adaptive Team participating and giving valuable tips and assistance.
The ASF (formally the Eastern Townships Disabled Skiers Foundation) is a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 1995 by Peter Treacy, himself, a disabled skier due to burns suffered in an accident many years ago. Their mission has been to establish, operate and maintain educational programs that encourage people with physical disabilities to discover new abilities through winter and summer sports. Over the past 19 years they have excelled at providing that service to individuals from Montreal to Sherbrooke. The ASF provides trained volunteers who assist these individuals to become as independent as possible in their chosen sport which fosters the development of self-confidence, motivation, increased physical strength and improved self-image while learning a lifelong sport/skill which can be enjoyed with family and friends.
